We have covered a lot in this week on safety and trust. These two concepts will serve as the foundation for the rest of what we will learn in the remainder of this course. Taking additional time to build this foundation really well will pay off as you implement additional strategies going forward. This is also where you will get the biggest payoff for energy spent when it comes to minimizing unwanted behaviors in the classroom.
Reflection:
- Are there students in your classroom that exhibit unwanted behaviors during specific times of the day, specific people, during specific types of activities or with specific types of assignments?
- If so, how can you make adjustments to your processes, routines, classroom expectations and/or outcomes to potentially support these students in a proactive way that might prevent some of the unwanted behavior?
- Are there places in your routines or outcomes that are loose and could use some tightening up?
- While some outcomes may be punitive in nature, are there opportunities to turn some into more feedback oriented outcomes that nurture a growth mindset?
- Have you brought your authentic self to your classroom structures and practices? Do you believe deeply in the culture of your classroom?
- Do you model growth mindset and grace with your students?
- Are there processes and/or outcomes that you can review to ensure they are equitable and support all students? Are there students in your class that have needs that impact other students? How can you adjust your processes to meet the often opposing needs of students?
Discussion:
This is a place to share your thoughts about your reflections. Share as much or as little as you like. This is also a place to ask questions of your peers or share insights and ideas.
Examples-
- Did you find places in the existing classroom structure that can be adjusted?
- Have you tried any of the ideas shared in this lesson? If so, how is it going?
- Did you have your own ideas as you went through this lesson? If so, share with your colleagues so we can learn from each other.
- Do you have students or situations that stump you? Ask for ideas from your colleagues here.
