Consider for a moment some of the students who struggle with behavior or motivation in your classrooms.
Who are they?
Who is their family?
What is their background?
Are they easy or difficult to build rapport with?
Are there certain situations that in which they seem to thrive and others in which they seem to regress?
Do they have quality friendships at school?
Do they have quality relationships at home?
As you think through these types of questions, does it seem possible that there could be a deeper reason for the student’s struggles? Don’t worry about how to overcome their struggles just yet. Just sit with the possibility that there could be more to the story than what is visible on the surface.
Share some reflections (no names, please) of students you have in your classroom now or have had in the past that display signs that could easily be misinterpreted as something other than a trauma response.
